The Case of Comrade Tulayev - AbeBooks - Victor Serge:

Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. In December , Jean McConville, a year-old mother of 10, was dragged from her Belfast home by masked intruders, her children clinging to her legs. They never saw her again. Her abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as "The Troubles". Everyone in the neighborhood knew the IRA was responsible.

The Case of Comrade Tulayev

But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In , five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach.

McConville's children knew it was their mother. On his deathbed, Franz Kafka asked that all his unpublished manuscripts be burned. Fortunately, his request was ignored, allowing such works as The Trial to earn recognition among the literary masterpieces of the 20th century. This brilliant new translation of The Castle captures comedic elements and visual imagery that earlier interpretations missed.

Hailed for her "fearless indictment of the most powerful man in Russia" The Wall Street Journal , award-winning journalist Masha Gessen is unparalleled in her understanding of the events and forces that have wracked her native country in recent times. In The Future Is History , she follows the lives of four people born at what promised to be the dawn of democracy.

Each came of age with unprecedented expectations, some as the children and grandchildren of the very architects of the new Russia, each with newfound aspirations of their own. Moscow, Christmas Eve, The Soviet secret police intercept a call made to the American embassy by a Russian diplomat who promises to deliver secrets about the nascent Soviet Atomic Bomb program. On that same day, a brilliant mathematician is locked away inside a Moscow prison that houses the country's brightest minds. He and his fellow prisoners are charged with using their abilities to sleuth out the caller's identity, and they must choose whether to aid Joseph Stalin's repressive state - or refuse and accept transfer to the Siberian Gulag camps, and almost certain death.

A land of astonishing natural beauty and a dizzying array of ancient cultures, the Caucasus for most of the 20th century lay inside the Soviet Union, before movements of national liberation created newly independent countries and sparked the devastating war in Chechnya.

Case Of Comrade Tulayev

Pulitzer Prize, Fiction, It is April , and Saigon is in chaos. At his villa, a general of the South Vietnamese army is drinking whiskey and, with the help of his trusted captain, drawing up a list of those who will be given passage aboard the last flights out of the country. The general and his compatriots start a new life in Los Angeles, unaware that one among their number, the captain, is secretly observing and reporting on the group to a higher-up in the Viet Cong.

With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy was thought to be absolute. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. But we now know this to be premature.

Authoritarianism first returned in Russia, as Putin developed a political system dedicated solely to the consolidation and exercise of power. In the last six years, it has creeped from east to west as nationalism inflames Europe, abetted by Russian propaganda and cyberwarfare. This classic, definitive account of totalitarianism traces the emergence of modern racism as an "ideological weapon for imperialism", beginning with the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe in the 19th century and continuing through the New Imperialism period from to World War I.

A high government official is shot on the street, and the hunt for the killer begins. The search leads all over the world, netting a series of suspects whose only connection is their innocence - at least of this crime.

It is a masterpiece, now available again after 30 years. I was referred to this story by Christopher Hitchens and gave it a shot. It was dark and well written but sad in its overall cold war conclusions.

Hitchens was one of our true intellectuals and that's what sold me on the book. Historically, a must read if you are interested in Russian history and a nation based on lies. Lot's of history behind Victor Serge a revolutionary worth knowing about. This fictional account of the events AFTER the Russian revolution provides an accurate account of what Stalin did to secure his wrong idea of "socialism in one country.

I loved this book! It tells an ironic tail of descent into hell paved with good intentions and how absolute power corrupts absolutely.

My recommendation would be to skip the first chapter, listen to the entire book, and then go back to the forward. A must for anyone who wants to understand the heart of the Russian revolution and it's self destruction.

A cautionary tale for anyone who believes in ideology over humanity. Brilliant portrait of delusion. Beautifully written, thought provoking. Worth rereading many times. These novels recreate the feel of daily existence years ago, animate the history texts, and give readers an irreplaceable personal perspective.

The case of Comrade Tulayev

Books like these ensure the past is not forgotten The quality of life depicted in The Case of Comrade Tulayev showed why the Stalinist monolith could not endure. Given the standard of fortitude, and given the contempt Serge always felt for Stalin's collaborators, a remarkable feature of The Case of Comrade Tulayev is its chiaroscuro That Serge intended no lenience here we may be sure, but we may likewise be sure that he would never have swallowed the later euphemisms and half-truths of Khrushchev, putting blame for all the enormities of an epoch on the evil of a single individual.

Serge can recognize the range of experience and responses that make up the texture of life in even the most nightmarishly repressive system.
